People Make Companies, Not Profit Margins

And when you treat people right, they don’t just work for you; they work *with* you.

Companies are like marriages.

You pick the right partner, put in the effort to understand them, and the relationship flourishes.

Now, replace "partner" with "people" and "relationship" with "company," and boom—there's your success formula.

It's easy to forget that buildings, fancy apps, or even multi-billion dollar companies aren't what makes a company great.

It’s the people who build them.

You can have all the top-tier tools in the world, but if your team is a bunch of robots (and not the AI kind), your business is in for a rough ride. Think of your company like a dhaba. The food’s awesome only if the cook cares about what they’re making. If they’re just flipping rotis with a deadpan expression, you’ll end up serving food that tastes like cardboard.

But give that same cook a reason to care, and you’ll be dishing out the kind of food people will drive 100 kilometers for.

Now, this isn’t just some TED Talk vibe I’m throwing at you.

Look at examples right here in India. Take Tata Group. The company’s legacy isn’t built just on selling cars or salt; it’s because they treat their employees with respect and care.

They’ve got employees who’ve been there for decades because Tata understands that if you accommodate your people, they will go the extra mile. Tata even took care of their employees' families during the pandemic, offering help when most other companies were cutting corners.

That’s a company thinking long-term, not short-term.

Or take Zoho. Sridhar Vembu, Zoho’s founder, has literally set up offices in rural areas to accommodate employees closer to their homes. He could’ve easily set up a giant office in Bangalore, but he knew the importance of keeping his people happy where they are.

This approach has built loyalty and given Zoho an edge in innovation and employee retention. That's because Zoho isn’t just a company, it's a community.

When you give people the tools and space they need, you don’t just get employees—you get partners in the journey. Just like your favorite chaiwala who remembers exactly how you like your tea, your employees will remember how you treated them.

And when you treat people right, they don’t just work for you; they work with you.

So the next time you’re wondering how to make your business a success, don’t just focus on the profit margins.

Focus on your people. Everything else will follow.
