Here’s a cheat sheet for Branding

I Almost Called My Startup "Potato."

No joke.

I was sitting on the floor of my living room, surrounded by sticky notes and self-doubt.

My girlfriend walked in, looked at one of the names I scribbled down --- "Potato" --- and gave me that are-you-serious stare.

And that's when it hit me.

I knew how to build a product.

But I had no clue how to brand it.

Most startup founders get it wrong.

They think branding means a cool logo, a catchy name, and some trendy colors.

Wrong.

Branding is the gut feeling people get when they hear your name.

It's not decoration.

It's identity.

Here's what I wish someone had told me back then:

If you want to stand out, you've got to start smart.

Branding strategies for startups begin with clarity.

Ask yourself:

  • What problem am I solving?
  • Who do I serve?
  • Why does it matter?

Get brutally honest.

Once you know the answers, everything else flows.

Next comes positioning.

Most people try to please everyone.

Big mistake.

Brand positioning tactics are about picking a corner of the market and owning it.

You don't need to shout louder.

You just need to say something no one else is saying.

Even if it sounds a little... stupid.

(Which is why "Stupidpreneur" worked better than "Potato," thank you very much.)

Want a brand that people remember?

Tell stories.

Brand storytelling techniques are your secret weapon.

Forget jargon. Ditch corporate tone.

Talk like a human.

Share the messy, weird, wonderful stuff behind your journey.

People don't connect with perfection.

They connect with personality.

You don't need a fancy agency.

You need a mirror.

DIY branding tips mean looking inward before you look outward.

What makes you tick?

Why did you start?

What do you believe that others don't?

These answers shape your visual identity, your voice, your vibe.

And they help you create a memorable brand that's more than just pretty packaging.

Still stuck?

Here's a cheat sheet:

  • Name your startup something people can remember.
  • Keep your visuals simple and clean.
  • Talk to your audience like they're your friends.
  • Say things that make you a little nervous.
  • Be the real you --- not a startup template.

Look.

You're building something from scratch.

It's chaotic. It's uncertain.

But if you get your branding right early on, it's like adding a jetpack to your business.

No more explaining.

No more being forgotten.

Just clarity, confidence, and customers who "get it."

So before you move to the next task on your startup to-do list...

Take a breath.

Look at your brand.

And please --- for the love of all things good --- don't name it "Potato."
