How to write founder stories that sell

I've lost count of how many people tell me, "Nobody wants to hear my story."

Total bullshit.

Honestly, I used to hide my own story, too. I didn't think anyone cared that I'd failed, pivoted three times, and lived on Maggi and cheap tea for what felt like forever. Guess what? The moment I started sharing that real shit, everything changed.

Here's what happened: people started replying to my emails. DMs popped off. Folks said things like, "Man, I thought I was the only one screwing things up."

Your founder story is NOT about bragging. It's about being a human being your customers can actually root for. They want to see the scrapes, the pivots, the near-burnout moments.

Nobody connects with a superhero, they connect with the guide who's got scars and still shows up.

You don't need some cinematic "epic." You just need honesty and a bit of guts.

Here's how I make it work:

  • Pick one raw, real moment --- not your whole freakin' biography.
  • Start with what hurt. Or scared you. Or almost broke you.
  • Show how you clawed through.
  • Connect that to why you do what you do now. Real reason, not corporate waffle.
  • Tell it like you'd tell a buddy over coffee (or cheap whisky if that's your style).

My story isn't about looking smart, it's about proof that "hard" leads to results. And that's what clicks with real customers.

**Hack:**If you want brand loyalty, give people a reason to believe you're more than another sales machine.
